Research Opportunities
The NQRTH research team supports JCU medical students in developing research skills and engaging in meaningful projects, with a strong focus on regional, rural and remote health. Our goal is to connect you with research opportunities and provide access to resources for starting or advancing your research journey, and promote research as an essential part of improving healthcare in rural communities.
We offer programs that encourage early involvement in research and provide mentorship and financial support. These opportunities give you the chance to gain hands-on experience, build essential skills, and contribute to meeting the health needs of rural communities.
Opportunities
NQRTH MBBS (Hons) Rural Research Scholarships

NQRTH MBBS Summer Research Bursary Program
The NQRTH MBBS Summer Research Bursary Program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience over the summer break. Open to JCU MBBS Years 1–4, this competitive program provides $500 bursaries to support students undertaking 4–6 weeks of research alongside experienced researchers.
Higher Degree by Research (HDR) and other Research Degrees
Through a partnership with the College of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University, there are growing numbers of Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates and Honours students engaging in relevant research and supported by inspiring research supervisors.
Gain experience and skills to conduct research in the field of tropical health and medicine with a Master of Philosophy or a Doctor of Philosophy. JCU’s HDR graduates are leaders in their field and are internationally recognised for discovering valuable new knowledge.
The Graduate Certificate of Research Methods and Graduate Diploma of Research Methods will cultivate your hands on research skills and can be used as a pathway to enrolling in a Master of Philosophy or a Doctor of Philosophy.
Many of JCU’s research degrees (HDR) offer flexible study options, such as studying from anywhere online.
NQRTH is an initiative of the Australian Government's Integrated Rural Training Pipeline (IRTP) and is facilitated by James Cook University in partnership with public and private hospitals, Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC), health services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and GP clinics.
