Your Pathway into Vascular Surgery training in North Queensland

Entry Requirements

  • Australia or New Zealand permanent resident or citizen 
  • General medical registration 
  • Completion of PGY2 
  • Completion of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Hand Hygiene Learning Module 
  • Completed the RACS “Operating with Respect” eLearning module (retiring lat 2023) or Introduction to Operating with Respect 
  • Successful completion of the Clinical Examination by the application date  
  • 8 weeks full time surgical rotation in General Surgery undertaken within the 7 years immediately prior to, and completed by, closing date of application  
  • 16 weeks full time surgical rotation in Vascular surgery undertaken within the 7 years immediately prior to, and completed by, closing date of application 

Total Training Time

Total: 5 years (full-time) sequential training in Vascular Surgery

  • Early (SET 1-2)  
  • Mid (SET 3-4) 
  • Late (SET 5)   

How to Apply

Applicants must register their intention to apply with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).  

In addition to the RACS generic eligibility criteria, further selection criteria for application and selection to Vascular Surgery is made through the Australia and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery.  

Application Deadline

Registration for selection opens in early January and stay open until the end of January. Application to the SET program opens early March. The closing date will vary each year. Please visit Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) for up to date information.  

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I complete a SET selection preparation course prior to applying?

RACS in partnership with the Specialty Societies delivering the Surgical Education and Training Program do not accredit, endorse or recommend any commercial providers delivering SET selection and interview training courses.

When are interviews held?

Interviews are held on June/July of each year.  

How many times can I apply to the program?

Applicants will be allowed a maximum of three attempts at selection into the SET program for Vascular Surgery.

When do I have to complete the eligibility criteria?

The generic eligibility requirements must be complete before you register to apply. The specialty specific eligibility requirements are dependent on the specialty. Please visit the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery
