Who we are

Northern Queensland Regional Training Hubs is a partnership between private and public hospital and health services, GP clinics and James Cook University, who are all committed to improving the health services of rural and remote communities in the northern Queensland region.

Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS) consists of more than 30 regional, rural and remote facilities. Covering an area from Cairns to Tully in the south, Cow Bay in the north and Croydon in the west, CHHHS serves a geographic footprint of 142,900 square kilometres and a population of 250,000.

Central West Hospital and Health Service

The Central West Hospital and Health Service consists of five hospitals (based in Alpha, Barcaldine, Blackall, Longreach and Winton, and ten satellite primary health clinics. Serving communities of remote central western Queensland from Tambo, in the south-east to Boulia in the north-west, the Central West Hospital and Health Service covers a geographic footprint of 396,650 and a population of 12,400.

Mackay Hospital and Health Service

The Mackay Hospital and Health Service consists of eight hospitals and four community health facilities. Covering a geographic footprint of more than 500,000 square kilometres and a population of 180,000 people, the Mackay Hospital and Health Service includes the communities of Airlie Beach, Collinsville, Bowen, Dysart, Moranbah, Proserpine and Sarina. The Mackay Base Hospital is the referral hospital for the Mackay region.

North West Hospital and Health Service

The North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) consists of one regional hospital, two multipurpose health services, three remote hospitals, four primary health clinics and five community health centres. Covering an area from North Western Queensland to the Gulf of Carpentaria, the service includes the communities of Mount Isa, Burketown, Camooweal, Cloncurry, Dajarra, Doomadgee, Julia Creek, Karumba, Normanton and Mornington Island. NWHHS serves a population of approximately 32,000 people across s 300,000 square kilometres.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service

The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) consists of 31 rural and remote primary health care centres, two hospitals, a multi-purpose health service and an integrated health service. With facilities on 13 Torres Strait Islands, the TCHHS covers a geographic footprint of more than 158,000 square kilometres. The TCHHS serves a population of more than 25,000 people, with 66% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service

The Townsville Hospital and Health Service (Townsville HHS) consists of 20 facilities including community health, aged-care facilities and rural hospitals. Covering an area from Cardwell in the north, Richmond in the west and Ayr and Home Hill in the south, the Townsville HHS serves a geographic footprint of 148,000 square kilometres and a population of 238,614 people.
The Townsville University Hospital is the only tertiary teaching hospital in North Queensland and supports a catchment population of more than 695,000 people.

The Cairns Private Hospital is a modern and well-equipped facility offering a comprehensive range of medical and allied health services including Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Maternity, Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology, Renal Dialysis, and Orthopaedic Surgery.

Mackay Mater Hospital

The Mackay Mater Hospital has been serving the local Mackay community for over 90 years. Specialists at the hospital include oncology, medical, surgical, obstetric, coronary care and palliative care. X-ray, pathology and pharmacy services are also available.

Townsville Mater Hospital

The Townsville Mater Hospital has served the local Townsville community since 1945. Townsville Private Clinic

The Townsville Private Clinic is Townsville’s only private inpatient mental health facility. The clinic’s team of psychiatrists, medical staff, nursing and allied health professionals provide expert care to treat and manage mental health disorders. Specialised services include neurostimulation – repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, older persons mental health, acute adult psychiatry, inpatient therapy programs, veterans and emergency services mental health, and a broad range of day therapy programs to support ongoing recovery and wellness.
